question on my mind . . .

a seemingly simple enough question. but, with many possibilities, variations, and differences of opinion. my answers change as i develop and am exposed to more and more in the world.

rca blurb

came across the following blurb about the royal college of art (rca) the other day when visiting tord boontje's website:

Tord Boontje has been appointed Professor and Head of Design Products, one of the most highly regarded and influential design departments in the world. Boontje will fill the role that is currently held by Professor Ron Arad, who steps down from the position in July.

an incredible school. an amazing program. outstanding professors. i hope to attend in 2010.

inverse

i am really drawn to the concept of a mirror reflection or inverse with furniture pieces. my favourite example is urquiola's crinoline outdoor series for b&b italia.

2 powerful words

simple, affirmative, powerful.

diesel's venture into furniture and lighting

lighting: left: cage suspension, right: tri-p floor

at the beginning of 2009 diesel signed a license contract with moroso and foscarini to develop and distribute furniture and lighting. renzo rosso, president of diesel explains: “diesel is a lifestyle brand - consumers choose us not only for the product but also for what diesel represents: the way of life, our values, the ironic, creative and unexpected approach. we decided to start with this adventure to offer to our consumer the possibility to express himself and personalized his home with products he feels near his taste." (www.foscarini.it)

i especially like the moroso furniture collection. am a big fan of the open rounded v-shape bases on chair and coffee tables. eager to see these pieces in person.

the art of simplicity

walked past a blank billboard today. found it much more striking then its neighbour to the right. love the wood backdrop. certainly made me contemplate what i would show on a sign of that scale.

it's that motto time again . . .

did i think of that one on my own, or am i using someone else's words? not sure, but good motto.

copy | variation | original

with my site ready to go up very soon, i have been thinking about copyrights, and notions of copies, variations, and originals. in a world where design surrounds us everywhere, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between these. i have 3 side-by-side comparisons:
knoll franco albini desk 1958 | bensen homework desk 2009?
50 years in between both designs. the biggest difference between both rests in the metal structure/legs.
my fav.: bensen homework (although i really am a fan of albini's work)
cassina feltri 1987 | ligne roset moël 2007?
20 or so years in between. main difference for me is the base of the armchairs: feltri is open, moël closed/solid.
my fav.: cassina feltri (by far)

tom dixon screw table 2009/10 | moroso diesel collection 2009
both designs were created very close together in time. this reminds me of looking at runway shows from the same season and seeing similar details from completely different designers. sometimes i think something is either in the air (ideas circulating, minds thinking in similar ways), or just plain coincidence.
my fav.: tom dixon screw table

(i should mention tom dixon is one of my favourite designers, and moroso one of my most admired furniture manufacturers)

(in the back of my mind I also keep thinking to prada's use of studs for fall/winter 2009. i seem to think prada was one of the first fashion labels to use them this season . . . perhaps that's just my perception. regardless, studs are suddenly everywhere. just today i saw studs on 'house & home' accessory pillows . . . oh my)

site preview

very excited about upcoming site. overall look and feel is just great!
