with my site ready to go up very soon, i have been thinking about copyrights, and notions of copies, variations, and originals. in a world where design surrounds us everywhere, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between these. i have 3 side-by-side comparisons:
knoll franco albini desk 1958 | bensen homework desk 2009?
50 years in between both designs. the biggest difference between both rests in the metal structure/legs.
my fav.: bensen homework (although i really am a fan of albini's work)
cassina feltri 1987 | ligne roset moël 2007?
20 or so years in between. main difference for me is the base of the armchairs: feltri is open, moël closed/solid.
my fav.: cassina feltri (by far)

tom dixon screw table 2009/10 | moroso diesel collection 2009
both designs were created very close together in time. this reminds me of looking at runway shows from the same season and seeing similar details from completely different designers. sometimes i think something is either in the air (ideas circulating, minds thinking in similar ways), or just plain coincidence.
my fav.: tom dixon screw table
(i should mention tom dixon is one of my favourite designers, and moroso one of my most admired furniture manufacturers)
(in the back of my mind I also keep thinking to prada's use of studs for fall/winter 2009. i seem to think prada was one of the first fashion labels to use them this season . . . perhaps that's just my perception. regardless, studs are suddenly everywhere. just today i saw studs on 'house & home' accessory pillows . . . oh my)
