copy | variation | original

with my site ready to go up very soon, i have been thinking about copyrights, and notions of copies, variations, and originals. in a world where design surrounds us everywhere, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between these. i have 3 side-by-side comparisons:
knoll franco albini desk 1958 | bensen homework desk 2009?
50 years in between both designs. the biggest difference between both rests in the metal structure/legs.
my fav.: bensen homework (although i really am a fan of albini's work)
cassina feltri 1987 | ligne roset moël 2007?
20 or so years in between. main difference for me is the base of the armchairs: feltri is open, moël closed/solid.
my fav.: cassina feltri (by far)

tom dixon screw table 2009/10 | moroso diesel collection 2009
both designs were created very close together in time. this reminds me of looking at runway shows from the same season and seeing similar details from completely different designers. sometimes i think something is either in the air (ideas circulating, minds thinking in similar ways), or just plain coincidence.
my fav.: tom dixon screw table

(i should mention tom dixon is one of my favourite designers, and moroso one of my most admired furniture manufacturers)

(in the back of my mind I also keep thinking to prada's use of studs for fall/winter 2009. i seem to think prada was one of the first fashion labels to use them this season . . . perhaps that's just my perception. regardless, studs are suddenly everywhere. just today i saw studs on 'house & home' accessory pillows . . . oh my)

sneak peak . . .

recently had a photo shoot for pictures to be used on my upcoming site (www.studiobrovhn.com). here is a sneak peak.

behind the scenes . . . turquoise dyeing

thought it would be nice to show some behind the scenes production pics.

drying
block printing (second time)
stencils made for block printing, for the prints that go over the edge. (when a print is half cut off it can be hard to know whether it is aligned straight or not)

important things

have had some time to reflect on things recently (not sure how with the craziness of my recent schedule). the list above outlines the things most important to me.

textile design 8

maybe it's a phase, this tye dye craze. then again maybe not. i am intrigued by it, but also cautious about stepping into a 'gypsy' aesthetic (for lack of a better description).
plan on using this fabric with a corresponding solid colour as pillowcases or pillow covers.

vancouver celebration of light 2009

inspiring on many levels. truly a unique experience sitting at the beach watching a great fireworks show.

textile design 7

final incarnation: textile design 1a

you might recognize this fabric from my june 16 blog. after printing, dyeing, then under printing i am finally saying it is done (in other words, no more modifications!)
